On March 16, the Democratic Governors Association announced a multi-million dollar ad buy in Wisconsin as part of the group’s Unrig the Map program. Wisconsin was named one of the top eight targets for 2018.

“Wisconsinites deserve a governor who will grow the economy, protect health care, and stand up to the chaos coming out of Washington, D.C.,” stated DGA Executive Director Elisabeth Pearson in a press release. “This ad buy is part of an unprecedented financial investment to redistricting and marks the next step in the DGA’s aggressive plan to fight back against Republicans around the country. Democrats are on offense this year, and the DGA is fully committed to success in Wisconsin.”

The Unrig the Map project was launched in 2015 in order to win targeted gubernatorial races that are key to 2021 redistricting. The zero-overhead fund scored a significant victory in November 2017 when Democrats won over Virigina.

Wisconsin is one of four Unrig the Map targets of a $20 million DGA ad buy. Other states include Nevada, Michigan and Ohio.

Unrig the Map states that Republican governors and state legislators implemented a state-by-state plan in 2010 to gerrymander legislative districts with hyper-partisan maps. The goal is to win back key states before the 2020 redistricting. According to the DGA, “the map is rigged” and they’re hoping to change that.
