Trump’s star on Hollywood Walk of Fame smashed

Trump’s Hollywood Star on the Walk of Fame.

The West Hollywood City Council this week unanimously approved a resolution seeking to remove President Donald Trump's star from the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

The resolution urges the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce and Los Angeles to remove the star because of what it says is Trump's "disturbing treatment of women and other actions."

The resolution also refers to "actions that do not meet the shared values of the City of West Hollywood, the region, state, and country."

However, chamber president Leron Gubler told the Los Angeles Times the chamber has never removed a star because it's considered part of the walk's "historic fabric."

This week's vote came after a man accused of taking a pickax to the star last month was charged with a felony count of vandalism.

The star was previously vandalized days before the November 2016 election.

It has been repaired.

The star recognized Trump for his work on the TV reality show The Apprentice.

A staff report released with the resolution at the West Hollywood City Council meeting says the Walk of Fame is about 2 miles long and contains more than 2,500 coral terrazzo and brass stars dedicated to famous members of the entertainment industry.

Each year, about 200 nominations are received for new stars and, in June, a committee selects about 20-24 people to be honored.

Trump received his star in 2007.

The staff report states in part:

Starting with the 2016 presidential election a number of disturbing instances concerning Mr. Trump's treatment of women came to light, including the Access Hollywood tape where Mr. Trump is heard .making disparaging remarks about women, multiple allegations of abuse and efforts to cover up those instances, as well as continued derogatory remarks regarding women. Similar to how certain members of the entertainment community have been removed from the Academy of Motion Pictures, due to their actions toward women, reflecting a stance on their values by the Academy, this is an opportunity for decision-makers to take a stand on their values in support of women and against disturbing treatment of women. It should be noted that Mr. Trump's star on the Walk of Fame has been destroyed in the past, and has been replaced by the City of Los Angeles using taxpayer funds.

In addition to his treatment of women, other actions of Mr. Trump and his administration have not met the shared values of the City of West Hollywood, the region, state, and country, these include:

• The separation of children from their parents at the United States border.

• Denial of findings from the United States intelligence community regarding Russian interference in the 2016 Presidential election, and continued refusal to hold Russia accountable for its crimes.

• Denial of the impacts of Climate Change on the world, and withdrawal from the Paris Climate Agreement.

• His treatment of transgender individuals, including his reversal of an Obama administration era policy to allow transgender individuals to serve in the military.

• Plans to divert funding from the Ryan White HIV/AIDS Program to cover the cost of child detainment tied to its "zero tolerance" immigration policy.

The report goes on to say "having a star on the Walk of Fame is a privilege that is highly sought after by those in the entertainment industry, allowing Mr. Trump to continue to have a star in light of his behavior toward women, particularly in the #timesup and #metoo movements, should not be acceptable in the Hollywood and entertainment industry communities. In addition, in light of the revelations that have come forward as part of the #timesup and #metoo movements, the City of Los Angeles and the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce may wish to revisit the qualifications for being included in the Walk of Fame, for both future stars and existing ones."
