Aspen Gay Ski Week plans mass civil-union ceremony

Organizers of Aspen Gay Ski Week are marking the event’s 37th year with what they hope will be the largest group civil-union ceremony of its kind.

The ceremony for same-sex couples is scheduled for Jan. 18 at Wagner Park in Aspen.

The Aspen Times reports the original idea was to hold the ceremony on top of Aspen Mountain, but the logistics proved troublesome.

The 2014 Aspen Gay Ski Week will be the first when such a ceremony could have happened. A law legalizing civil unions in Colorado took effect May 1.

Aspen Gay Ski Week bills itself as the nation’s largest and oldest gay ski event. Organizers say it draws nearly 5,000 people. They hope one-fifth of attendees this year will take part in the civil union ceremony.
