Racine-based artist Deb Marett and the BONK! Poetry and Music Series will present 15 Minutes of Fame on March 25 at 6:30 p.m. at Preservation Hall, 740 Lake Ave. in Racine.
The event features eight speakers who have been a part of Marett’s FAMOUS Portraits Art Project. The project has showcased a local poet, a holocaust survivor who helped save hundreds of Jews, a pediatric cancer researcher, and more. They will speak about their work, ideas, and living a life of intent and impact.
The FAMOUS Portraits Art Project is inspired by a poem, “Famous,” by author Naomi Shihab Nye, the keynote speaker for the event. Nye has been featured in Oprah Magazine, PBS, NPR, and more. Her work in poetry and children’s literature has resulted in multiple awards.
Additional speakers for the event include Nick Demske, a Racine poet; Timothy Westbrook, a New York fashion designer, sustainability-focused fiber artist, and former Project Runway contestant; Olu Sijuwade, a non-violent communication facilitator, and advocate for peace and justice; Aszya Summers, Conservation Education Manager at the Racine Zoo; Paul Willis, a poet and environmental writer; Thea Kovac, a Milwaukee artist and teacher; and Travis DuPriest, a Racine author, professor and retired priest.
There is a $5 suggested donation at the door. For more information visit debmarett.com/15-minutes-of-fame.
