JK Rowling tells a new Potter story on her website

Eight years after writing the last of her “Harry Potter” novels, J.K. Rowling is still adding to the boy wizard’s story.

The author posted new information recently about the Potter family, the background provided on a “newly imagined” and mobile friendly version of the Pottermore Web portal (www.pottermore.com ) that Rowling established in 2012.

In a brief essay titled, “The Potter Family,” Rowling traces Harry’s roots to “the twelfth-century wizard Linfred of Stinchcombe, a locally well-beloved and eccentric man, whose nickname, ‘the Potterer’, became corrupted in time to ‘Potter.”” She also offers the backstory on the “Invisibility Cloak,” a legacy made possible by a “beautiful young witch” named Iolanthe Peverell.

James Franco to play the Wizard of Oz

The man who’s something of a wizard in real life is in talks to take on the role of the Wizard in a pre-equel to the classic movie “The Wizard of Oz.”

James Franco will replace Robert Downey Jr. in “Oz, The Great and Powerful,” a Disney project to be directed by Sam Raimi (“Spiderman”), according to The Hollywood Reporter. Like the book and stage musical “Wicked,” the feature film will tackle the backstory of Dorothy’s visit to Oz.

The plot follows the Kansas conman who later becomes Oz’s Wizard as his hot air balloon is swept up by a tornado and lands in the mystical place where Dorothy will later visit. He falls in love with Glinda, the Good Witch, and the two plot against her evil sisters.

If cast, this would just be the latest appointment in Franco’s impossibly busy schedule, the Reporter notes. In addition to an upcoming Broadway play, Franco is hosting the Oscars, directing two movies based on classic novels, starring in and directing a film about a serial killer, and working on at least three post-grad literary programs (Franco is a Ph.D. literature candidate at Yale. He’s also announced that he plans to teach a college course about himself.

Sounds like wizadry.
