Davina & the Vagabonds

There are a lot of influences you can attach to Davina & the Vagabonds — New Orleans jazz, Memphis soul, gospel harmonies — but there’s no denying the band is a singularly individual force. Fronted by singer and pianist Davina Sowers, the quintet is earning converts left and right, drawn to the unique sound and emphasis on acoustic instruments. She and the band will present a Valentine’s Day Cabaret, sponsored by Wisconsin Public Radio.

At the Majestic Theatre in Madison. Tickets are $15 and can be purchased at majesticmadison.com.

Aaron Parnell Brown and Jacob Jones

Aaron Parnell Brown draws his musical influences from all over the map — Lennon and McCartney, James Taylor, Al Kooper — but it’s his hometown roots in Philly that gave him the Philadelphia soul foundation he’s needed as a vocalist and performer. On his latest record, The Tin Man, he’s relating himself to the Wizard of Oz character, brushing the rust out of his heart and finding soulful songs in its place. Opening is Madison musician Jacob Jones, a talented performer in his own right. He’ll perform an acoustic set perfectly tuned to his raw, powerful voice.

At The Frequency in Madison. Tickets range from $6 to $8. For more information visit madisonfrequency.com.

Josh Ritter

One of Americana’s most distinctive artists has a fresh new album off the presses, and he’ll be dropping in to Madison’s Barrymore Theater to show it off. Sermon on the Rocks was recorded in New Orleans, and Ritter has said it’s his most freewheeling and rollicking record yet, “messianic oracular honky-tonk.” Exactly what that entails? Drop in to find out. Elephant Revival opens.

At the Barrymore Theatre in Madison. Tickets are $25 and can be purchased at barrymorelive.com

Joan Armatrading

We have good news and bad news about Joan Armatrading’s latest tour, passing through Madison this fall. Let’s start with the downer: The award-winning, prolific British musician has announced that this will be her final major tour, after more than 40 years on the road. On the other hand, this is also Armatrading’s first-ever “solo” tour — just her, a guitar, a piano and that voice of hers — which is sure to make this farewell to one of music’s greatest singer/songwriters even more poignant. Americana singer/songwriter Kristina Train opens.

At UW Union Theatre in Madison. Tickets are $35, $45, $55 or $100, with student tickets for $25. For more information visit uniontheater.wisc.edu.
