A MoveOn member’s petition demanding an investigation into allegations of sexual harassment and assault by Donald Trump has gained more than 150,000 signatures in a week.
The petition, started on MoveOn.org’s platform by Susan O’Connor of Wisconsin, is gaining momentum as U.S. Rep. John Conyers and U.S. Sen. Al Franken resigned in the wake of harassment and assault allegations — and it comes as Time Magazine named “The Silence Breakers” the 2017 Person of the Year.
O’Connor says: “You don’t get to be my age without lots of personal experience that you hear about with #MeToo. These sexist attacks on women lead to shame and humiliation in personal and professional life, and I’m angry so I started this petition. I want young women to know they don’t have to put up with it. I want men to know they’re going to be held accountable. More than 150,000 people who signed my MoveOn petition in a week are a sign of things to come no matter how powerful a position someone may hold.”
O’Connor is asking the U.S. Department of Justice and Congress to launch formal investigations into Trump’s conduct.
She feels House Speaker Paul Ryan, R-Wis., and Congress have brushed off the idea of investigating Trump for sexual assault and harassment.
A new Quinnipiac poll shows 70 percent of Americans support an investigation into these allegations.
