Paul Ryan is the gun lobby's favorite U.S. representative

Paul Ryan raked in $171,977 from the pro-gun lobbyists in 2016.

House Speaker Paul Ryan received more money from pro-gun groups such as the National Rifle Association and Gun Owners of America than any other member of the U.S. House of Representatives in 2016.

The Center for Responsive Politics, a nonpartisan think tank that tracks money in politics, said more than half of the members of the House of Representatives — 232 of the 435 — took contributions from the gun lobby. The money went disproportionately to Republicans, who hauled in nearly $6 million compared with Democrats’ $106,000.

Ryan raked in $171,977 from the groups, while Republican Sean Duffy was the second-highest Wisconsin beneficiary, receiving $20,180.

Rep. Glenn Grothman got $9,250 and Rep. Jim Sensenbrenner was paid $2,950.

The only Democrat among Wisconsin’s House members — Rep. Ron Kind —accepted $6,500.

As analyzed by Politico, Ryan also stood atop the most heavily supported members of Congress during the period from 1990 to 2017. His haul for the 17-year stretch was $336,597.

A total of 27 representatives — all Republicans — took in more than $100,000 from gun lobbyists during those years.

One Democrat nearly reached the $100,000 milestone. Rep. Collin Peterson from Minnesota received $98,500.
