On Sunday, Feb. 18, the Milwaukee General Defense Committee will organize a counter-demonstration in opposition to a protest by 40 Days for Life, a pro-life campaign.
The pro-life campaigners will be protesting outside of Affiliated Medical Services on Farwell Ave. in an attempt steer away potential patients and shut it down for good.
In a global-wide protest, 40 Days for Life will be organizing outside of abortion clinics over the span of 40 days, starting on Feb. 14 and ending on March 25. The 40 day time period is symbolic in biblical history. Members will gather outside of AMS to pray, fast and hold peaceful vigils.
However, according to the Milwaukee General Defense Committee, 40 Days of Life protestors responded with racism and misogyny during a counter-demonstration that occurred at AMS last fall. During those protests, MGDC was able to drive away 40 Days for Life protestors and reclaim the area in front of the clinic.
The MGDC will aim to demonstrate that Wisconsin supports its only remaining independent abortion clinic and that there is no tolerance for shame or guilt towards patients.
The counter-demonstration will consist of two concurrent mini-marches that will end at the clinic. One group will meet at the southeast corner of Farwell and Curtis and the other at Burns Commons park. The groups will meet at 2:15 p.m. and will march onto AMS at 2:30 p.m., where a 90 minute rally will occur.
The MGDC warns that tyically protestors should be ignored in order to reduce the stress levels of patients. However, the clinic will be closed on Sunday.
Donations for AMS will be accepted at the event, particularly items like adult sized underwear, adult sized socks and winter coats.
