voting booth

A town hall promoting fair voting maps will be held at Washington Park Public Library, 2121 N. Sherman Blvd., Milwaukee, Sept. 12 from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m.

The U.S. Supreme Court is reviewing a federal court decision stating that Wisconsin’s voting maps are unconstitutional. Judges said that Wisconsin’s voting districts were manipulated to give one party an unfair advantage. The practice is known as gerrymandering.

The town hall will explain how gerrymandering happens and why it harms communities. Local leader Shauntay Nelson of Wisconsin Voices and former State Legislators Dale Schultz (R) and Tim Cullen (D) will lead the discussion.

Nelson, Schultz, and Cullen will also outline a solution to gerrymandering that puts a nonpartisan state agency, the Legislative Reference Bureau, in control of voting maps. Two bills in the Wisconsin legislature, Senate Bill 13 and Assembly Bill 44, propose adopting this model, which has been used in Iowa with support from both Democrats and Republicans.

A question period will follow the town hall presentation. The event is cosponsored by Citizen Action of Wisconsin, the Fair Elections Project, Wisconsin Voices, the Uptown Crossing Neighborhood Association, and Organizing for Action (OFA) Wisconsin.
