Hello Death (album release), Liv Mueller, Mark Waldoch

June 23, 8 p.m., $10, Anodyne Coffee Roasting Co. • anodynecoffee.com

“I wrote ‘Tin House’ to help process my feelings of disgust and anger at our nation’s continued institutional racism, to help process my white guilt, to help process my sadness and denial, and to try and understand what it would feel like to be constantly put-upon by the false notions of strangers,” Nathaniel Heuer writes of the single featured on Milwaukee folk band Hello Death’s upcoming album. Consisting of several veterans of the Milwaukee music scene, Hello Death members are using songs like “Tin House” to lift their collective voices to fight for those who go unheard. The new album — For Those With Many Hearts — was recorded in a barn called Speckled Chemistry Studios in Cedarburg, and will be released June 23 with a show at Anodyne Coffee Roasting Co. The show is all ages, and anyone under 17 is admitted free.

Jazz singer Jeannine Rivers is considered one of the most sought-after jazz vocalists in Wisconsin. Her debut album Iridescent October took two-and-one-half years to complete and features an eclectic cast of Milwaukee musicians. Released in 2016, the album explores the difficulties with which Rivers struggled with the passing away of her fiancé — and her fight to push forward. The album features covers of songs by Sarah Vaughn, Natalie Cole, Barbra Streisand and more, which Rivers reinterprets in her own dynamic way.

ALL AGES SHOW featuring awakebutstillinbed, Live Tetherball Tonight, Snag, Beach Burial

June 30, 3 p.m., $7, Cactus Club

• cactusclubmilwaukee.com

All-ages shows are hard to come by in Milwaukee, but Cactus Club is opening its doors early for one you won’t want to miss. awakebutstillinbed is a California-based emo project fronted by Shannon Taylor. The band’s debut album — what people call low self-esteem is really just seeing yourself the way that other people see you — was released earlier this year and is packed with abrasive, energetic emo tracks. Taylor pushes her vocals to the limit, harnessing the emotive energy of her backing band and projecting it outward, reminding listeners how emo music became so popular in the first place.

Milwaukee Psyche Fest Presents: Josefus, Doomstress, Plastic Crimewave Syndicate, DJ Christopher Schulist

June 30, 9 p.m., $10, Cactus Club

• cactusclubmilwaukee.com

Josefus — a band credited with pioneering the Texas hard-rock/heavy-metal movement — has reunited to release new music in 2018. With more than 40 years of long hiatuses and then reunions, the loud and heavy Texas band visits Milwaukee at the end of the month. The band’s album Dead Man — released in 1970 and now reissued — was deemed “too psychedelic” and heavy for Houston’s International Artists. With a new audience and another shot at making a new record, Josefus is back to finish what it started over 40 years ago.
