DJ Kool Herc, the "Father of Hip Hop"

Miller High Life Theatre announced June 26 that the venue will participate in celebrating Milwaukee’s inaugural Hip-Hop Week MKE.

Hip-Hop Week MKE is a new, citywide celebration of the genre and the culture surrounding it in Milwaukee. In February, the Common Council unanimously approved the festival, which is expected to run from Aug. 20 – 26. According to Ald. Khalif Rainey, a lead sponsor of the proposal to create the event, the week-long celebration will put an emphasis on health, financial literacy and civic engagement.

Miller High Life Theatre will host a “Couch Conversation” with DJ Kool Herc, offering hip-hop artists and fans the opportunity to hear stories and ask questions of the Jamaican-born, Bronx-based “Father of Hip-Hop.”

The event will begin at 4 p.m. on August 24 and will be moderated by influential author, speaker and social critic Michael Arceneaux. Local hip-hop artist, activist and entrepreneur Ed Hennings will kickoff the event with stories and a Q&A session about his experiences as a musician and a business owner in Milwaukee’s 53206 zip code.

General admission tickets are $40 and go on sale at 10:00 a.m. on July 9. Tickets can be purchased at the Miller High Life Theatre Box Office, 500 W. Kilbourn Ave., by phone at 1-800-745-3000 or online at www.ticketmaster.com.
