E.T.A. Hoffmann’s best-known tale is The Nutcracker, but this masterful storyteller has more than one narrative up his sleeve. In this opera fantastique by Jacques Offenbach, Hoffmann himself tells three of them, each a magical tale of love lost, with heroines and villains all about him and his Muse forever at his side. It’s a passionate blend of fantasy and realism that becomes a moving tribute to what it means to be an artist.
