Bamboo joins marijuana on banned plant list in Champaign, Illinois

The AP

As of Feb. 3, residents of Champaign, Illinois, will be barred from planting running bamboo.

The city said in a news release that a new ordinance banning the plant within the city limits has been adopted by the city council.

The release says the plant spreads aggressively and can grow up to 30 feet tall. Anyone who already has the plant on their property can keep it provided they maintain it.

City officials recommended last year that running bamboo be added to a list of 15 banned plants that includes marijuana, poison oak and kudzu.

At the time they said they knew of only two properties with the plant. But one neighbor complained huge plants weighed down by snow at one home had pulled electrical lines away from her house.
