Dolphins player fined, banned from team activities for Michael Sam tweet

Wisconsin Gazette

Dolphins safety S. Don Jones was fined and banned from team activities after he tweeted “OMG” and “horrible” in response to Michael Sam kissing his boyfriend after being drafted into the NFL on May 10.

Sam, who is openly gay and was a star at the University of Missouri, was drafted in the seventh round by the St. Louis Rams.

He awaited draft news with family and friends at his agent’s home in California. And, after getting the call, embraced and kissed his boyfriend.

Jones, who was drafted a year ago in the seventh round, tweeted “OMG” in reaction to the kiss.

Then, in response to a tweet to him, tweeted, “Horrible.”

Though both tweets were deleted, Dolphins officials were aware of them and reacted. The Dolphins coach and general manager said the tweets were inappropriate and said Jones could not participate in team activities until he underwent training.

Jones apologized to Sam for the “inappropriate comments” and said he regretted that the tweets “took away from his draft moment,” according to the Chicago Tribune.

After severe bullying one player by two other Dolphins last season, management has been working to deal with harassment policies and training.
