Cher says she turned down invite to Russia for Olympics

Cher says in an interview with Maclean's that she turned down an invitation to Russia for the Winter Games in Sochi. Russia, and its hosting of the Olympics, have come under criticism because of the newly enacted anti-gay law that bars "propaganda" that promotes homosexuality.

In the story, headlined online as "Cher on the art of the comeback," the star entertainer answers this question: "What do you think about what’s going on in Russia right now?"

She says, "I can’t name names but my friend called who is a big oligarch over there, and asked me if I’d like to be an ambassador for the Olympics and open the show. I immediately said no. I want to know why all of this gay hate just exploded over there. He said the Russian people don’t feel the way the government does."

She also talks about meeting Eartha Kitt when she was a teenager, her first cover on Time, glamour, Madonna and Lady Gaga, her strong support for Hillary Rodham Clinton, right-wing attacks on abortion and transgender son Chaz.
