People For the American Way collected more than 178,000 signatures petitioning U.S. House Speaker John Boehner to remove Rep. Michele Bachmann, R-Minn., from the Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence in the 113th Congress.
The liberal organization dedicated to monitoring and challenging ultra-right efforts in the United States says Bachmann has abused her post on the committee.
Bachmann earned rebukes from Boehner, John McCain and others last year when she launched a smear campaign against Hillary Rodham Clinton aide Huma Abedin, alleging that Abedin and other Muslim-American public servants were agents of the Muslim Brotherhood.
“Michele Bachmann has used her position on the Intelligence Committee to spread baseless conspiracy theories and smear the reputations of honorable public servants,” Michael Keegan, president of People For the American Way stated in a news release.
He continued, “Speaker Boehner himself called her actions ‘dangerous.’ It’s mysterious, then, why he has chosen to reward her reckless extremism with continued access to sensitive national security information and a powerful platform for her agenda.”
The ultra-right wing Bachmann, one of the most vocal foes of LGBT equality in Congress, ran for the presidential nomination in the GOP. After abandoning that campaign, she faced a tight race to keep her seat in Congress.
The petition states:
Dear Speaker Boehner:
In service to ugly Islamophobic fear mongering, Rep. Michele Bachmann continues unabated in her unfounded and irresponsible attacks on dedicated public servants – a witch hunt that has targeted Huma Abedin, a key aide to Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, and now includes allegations that President Obama may be aiding the rise of global Sharia law.
Conspiracy theories and religious McCarthyism should have no place in our government, especially in the House Intelligence Committee, on which Rep. Bachmann sits.
Please remove Rep. Bachmann from her seat on the Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence immediately. Members of the House Intelligence Committee are entrusted with classified information that affects the safety and security of all Americans. That information should not be in the hands of anyone with such a disregard for honesty, misunderstanding of national security, and lack of respect for his or her fellow public servants.
