Report: 265 transgender people killed this year

A report from the international Trans Murder Monitoring Project says 265 transgender people were killed in the past 12 months.

Since January 2008, there have been more than 1,000 transgender people killed.

The report, out days before Transgender Remembrance Day observed annually on Nov. 20, reports a 20 percent increase in killings in the past year.

The TMM began tracking the deaths in 2009.

The latest report shows the majority of deaths this past year — 126 deaths — occurred in Brazil. There were 48 known killings in Mexico, 15 in the United States, nine in Venezuela, eight in Honduras, six in Colombia, six in Uruguay and five in Guatemala.

TMM reported six deaths in India, five in Pakistan, four in the Philippines and five in Turkey.

On Nov. 20, the 14th International Transgender Day of Remembrance, the names of those killed, and transgender people slain in years prior, will be read aloud in ceremonies around the world.
