Pirates' former owner Kevin McClatchy comes out as gay

Kevin McClatchy, who was owner and CEO of the Pittsburgh Pirates from 1996 to 2007, came out to The New York Times in an op-ed that will appear in tomorrow’s edition.

The newspaper chain heir said he’d remained closeted due to the overwhelming homophobia in the baseball world.

“I’ve got a birthday coming up where I'm turning old,” McClatchy, who turns 50 in January, told The Times. “I've spent 30 years … not talking about my personal life, lying about my personal life.”

Last year, Rick Welts, the president and chief executive officer of the Phoenix Suns became the first major-league executive or former executive to come out as gay.

McClatchy sold his shares of the Pirates in 2009 after ensuring that the club would remain in Pittsburgh.

McClatchy will also be the subject of Wednesday’s “Outside The Lines” at 3 p.m. ET on ESPN.
