New suspect sketch released in shooting of Texas girlfriends

WiG

Texas authorities have released a refined artist rendering of the suspect in the murder of Mollie Judith Olgin and the shooting of Mary Kristene Chapa.

The double-shooting of the young women took place June 22 in a park in Portland, Texas. Witnesses said they were taking a walk in the park before taking in a movie.

Olgin died at the scene. Her girlfriend survived the attack but was critically injured by a gunshot wound to her head.

Law enforcement first released a sketch of a suspect, based on a description provided by Chapa, on July 4.

Chapa, as she improved, indicated she wanted to revisit the drawing. She worked with a forensic artist with the Texas Rangers – the same artist who drew the first sketch.

“It is unusual to go back and refine a suspect drawing,” said Portland Police Chief Randy Wright. “But in this case, our eyewitness sustained a brain injury that initially affected her ability to communicate effectively. The good news is she has made exceptional progress.”

Wright said Chapa’s sight and speech has improved and she’s been working with investigators to reconstruct the crime.

“She wants very badly to help us identify Mollie’s murderer,” Wright said.

He said the department continues to work closely with the Texas Rangers and the FBI to help solve this case.

The physical description of the suspect has not changed. He is described as an Anglo male in his 20s, 5 foot 8 inches, thin build, 140 pounds, with brown hair and scruffy beard.

The police department is receiving tips at 361-777-4444.
