‘Growing Pains’ star Cameron records video for anti-gay NOM

WiG

Kirk Cameron, who starred on “Growing Pains” as a child actor, has recorded a video opposing marriage equality for the National Organization for Marriage.

Gay rights activists, after viewing the video on July 11, pointed to disclosed documents in which NOM outlined its goal of finding “non-cognitive elites” to serve as celebrity spokespeople for its cause. The cause is to block efforts to legalize gay marriage at the state level and to recognize gay marriages at the federal level.

NOM, in an announcement for the video, said, “Made famous as a child actor, today Kirk Cameron is one of America’s most important marriage champions. Kirk stands fearlessly in defense of God’s truth about marriage despite frequent and merciless harassment by the mainstream media for his outspoken Biblical views.”

Cameron, said NOM, is working “to strengthen and defend marriage, one couple at a time.”

The Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation had a different take.

“Kirk Cameron and the anti-gay activists at NOM are making a claim that Americans know to be false,” said GLAAD president Herndon Graddick. “This rhetoric won’t work anymore. Communities across this country love and cherish their LGBT neighbors, friends and family members. This includes people in families headed by LGBT people. Their implication that LGBT couples can’t create loving and stable homes is not only outdated and irrelevant; it’s designed specifically to hurt those families.”

The focus in the marriage equality battle has been on Cameron before, including earlier this year, when he said being gay is “unnatural,” “detrimental” and “ultimately destructive to so many of the foundations of civilization.”

Celebrities on the equality side, including “Growing Pains” co-stars Tracey Gold and Alan Thicke, challenged Cameron.
