Masked neo-Nazis beat gay activist in Kiev
Masked assailants, described in the press as neo-Nazis, beat Svyatoslav Sheremet, the leader of the Gay Forum of Ukraine in Kiev.
The May 20 incident took place during a press conference, with reporters and photographers looking on.
A Reuters photographer, Anatolii Stepanov, captured images of the attack, which involved at least three masked men punching, kicking and jumping on Sheremet as he was on the ground, trying to protect his face and abdomen.
Reporters said the attackers stopped hitting Sheremet when they realized they were being filmed.
Sheremet’s group had been involved in organizing a Pride event in Kiev and was explaining to reporters why that it was canceled due to concerns for safety.
Ukraine’s parliament, meeting on May 22, was expected to discuss anti-gay violence.
