HRC: Romney PAC donated to NOM
The Human Rights Campaign reports that Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney donated to the anti-gay National Organization for Marriage through his PAC.
The amount is listed in a Schedule of Contributors form from 2008 that shows Romney’s Free and Strong America PAC contributed $10,000 to the anti-gay cause.
At the time, NOM was heavily involved in campaigning for the passage of Proposition 8 in California, an effort that also had substantial backing from the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints.
HRC noted that Free and Strong America PAC filings with the Federal Election Commission for the period did not show a contribution to NOM, but a contribution was disclosed by an Alabama-based Free and Strong America.
The donation also wasn’t recorded on NOM’s public 990 form.
HRC received the information, a copy of the form, from what was described as a whistleblower early on March 30.
HRC, in reporting the finding, called on Romney to denounce NOM and its “scare tactics” and strategy of “racial division.”
Internal NOM documents released earlier in the week as a result of a campaign finance investigation of NOM in Maine detailed that the national group made dividing gays, blacks and Hispanics integral to its strategy to block marriage equality.
