Anti-gay marriage pol faced domestic abuse complaint

WiG

New Mexico state Rep. David Chavez, who in late January introduced a bill to protect “traditional marriage” and ban gay marriage, was served with an order of protection from domestic abuse and divorce papers in October 2010.

DemocracyforNewMexicoNow.org, an activist news site, reported that Chavez’ wife filed a domestic abuse complaint in mid-October 2010 and, the same day, sought a protective order and filed to dissolve their four-year marriage.

Last week, Chavez introduced legislation to define marriage in the state as the union of a man and a woman and to deny recognition of legal same-sex marriages from other states.

The measure also would refuse recognition of civil unions and partnerships from other states.

Equality New Mexico quickly organized a campaign to persuade Chavez, a Republican from Los Lunas, to pull his bill.

New Mexico citizens are being asked to send letters to Chavez stating, “In New Mexico we value diversity, and these kind of wedge issue debates do nothing but hurt our communities, and send painful messages to LGBT youth and children being raised in same-sex households.

“I also urge you to instead focus on what matters most to New Mexicans: education, jobs, and the economy.”

The statewide LGBT civil rights group also launched a Change.org petition.
