NC gay marriage ban opponents stump at colleges

AP

Opponents of a constitutional amendment to ban gay marriage in North Carolina are going to college.

A voter registration drive aimed at defeating the amendment when it comes up for a statewide vote in May kicked off on college campuses on Jan. 27. Amendment opponents are in Cullowhee, home of Western Carolina University. The campaign holds multiple events in Asheville this weekend.

The amendment also would prevent the state from recognizing civil unions or domestic partnerships.

Advocates for changing the state constitution say the measure would protect one man and one woman unions from those who want to expand what’s legal. The coalition is made up largely of conservative-leaning groups, ministers and Southern Baptists who want voters to approve the amendment. They kicked off their campaign on Jan. 23.
