LA tentatively OKs requiring condoms for porn actors
The Los Angeles City Council voted this week to tentatively approve an ordinance requiring porn actors to wear condoms and setting conditions to enforce the rule.
A second and final vote would be needed next week to enact the ordinance. The first vote was 11-1 in favor.
The measure would make film permits contingent on producers supplying the condoms and requiring their use on sets.
The AIDS Healthcare Foundation urged adoption of the protection and called the council vote historic.
The Free Speech Coalition opposed approval.
Adoption of the ordinance, the first of its kind, could avoid a ballot initiative on a proposal from AHF next summer. AHF collected more than 70,000 signatures in the drive.
California law does require that porn actors wear condoms but the measure is rarely enforced, according to safe-sex advocates.
