Porno Pete's group loses tax-exempt status

An anti-gay hate group based in Naperville, Ill., has lost its tax-exempt status.

Americans For Truth About Homosexuality, which was designated as a hate group by the Southern Poverty Law Center for promoting inflammatory mistruths about LGBT people, lost its tax-exempt status after failing to file a series of required tax forms for three consecutive years, according to the blog Ex-Gay Watch.

Although the group’s tax status was revoked on May 10, 2010, the group continues to tell donors that their contributions to it are tax-deductible, according to the blog..

Founded in 1996, AFTAH is “a national organization devoted exclusively to exposing and countering the homosexual activist agenda,” according to its website. Its founder and president Peter LaBarbera (pictured) has been dubbed “Porno Pete” for his seeming obsession with the mechanics of gay sex. LaBarbera often goes “undercover” to leather bars and sexually charged events, such as the Folsom Street Fair, to observe and write about them.

The Southern Poverty Law Center uses the “hate group” designation for groups that “have beliefs or practices that attack or malign an entire class of people, typically for their immutable characteristics.”

LaBarbera frequently makes news headlines for his antics. At the height of the controversy over TSA pat-down inspections at airports, he wrote, “The reality is, most traveling men would not want Barney Frank to pat them down at the airport security checkpoint. Neither would it be fair to assign Ellen DeGeneres to pat down female travelers.”
