Weiner to announce resignation today

Multiple sources are reporting that embattled U.S. Rep. Anthony Weiner plans to resign this afternoon under pressure from Democratic Party officials.

For weeks, Weiner has been embroiled in a scandal over lewd photos and messages that he sent online to at least six women. Revelations from young women involved in the scandal have surfaced almost daily.

During a tearful news conference recently he admitted he had told a series of lies to cover up his bad behavior. Top Democrats have called for a House ethics probe to see if Weiner had broken any rules, including abusing his congressional office.

The Wall Street Journal reports that Weiner called House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi and Rep. Steve Israel, head of the Democrats’ re-election committee in the House, Wednesday night to tell them he’d step down. The pressure on Mr. Weiner to quit reached a peak when President Barack Obama told NBC News that Mr. Weiner had embarrassed himself and his family. “I can tell you that if it was me, I would resign,” Mr. Obama said.

Weiner has claimed to be in a rehab facility over the past week. Prior to the scandal, he was considered the top candidate to replace New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg.
