New polling from the Public Religion Research Institute finds that more and more young people support abortion and reproductive rights.

This news couldn’t have arrived at a better or more necessary time, as the Trump administration has taken aim at those same rights both here in the United States and around the world.

Trump’s first act as president was to sign an executive order expanding the Global Gag Rule, making it even harder for women and girls in other countries to access family planning.

Under this policy, organizations are barred from receiving desperately needed U.S. assistance if they mention the word abortion, even if abortion services are legal in their respective countries and provided with their own, private funding.

Trump’s Global Gag Rule has forced clinics to close and cut off access to birth control, safe abortion, and other life-saving health initiatives.

Contrary to popular conservative belief, cutting off access to reproductive health care actually increases the rates of unintended pregnancies.

Every year 47,000 pregnant people die due to unsafe abortion. Under Trump’s Global Gag Rule, unsafe abortions and the maternal mortality rate will skyrocket.

A bipartisan group of senators and congresspeople, led by U.S. Sen. Jeanne Shaheen iand U.S. Rep. Nita Lowey, have introduced the Global HER (Health, Empowerment, Rights) Act, which would repeal the Global Gag Rule and prevent a future president from unilaterally imposing this policy.

House Speaker Paul Ryan, R-Wis., voted against the Global HER Act at every turn, but his retirement means Wisconsin has a chance to elect a representative who truly cares about women’s lives.

Reproductive justice is essential to the quality of life of women and girls all over the world, and the PRRI poll proves young people believe this is a cause worth fighting for. So fight.
