Paul Ryan

Paul Ryan is facing a torrent of ridicule on social media today after tweeting that a woman who got a pay raise of $1.50 per week proved that the Republican tax reform package is working.

Ryan tweeted: “A secretary at a public high school in Lancaster, PA, said she was pleasantly surprised her pay went up $1.50 a week ... she said [that] will more than cover her Costco membership for the year.”

The recently passed Republican tax package gave massive cuts to corporations and the uber-wealthy. Ryan and other GOP officials said the money would trickle down to the middle class in the form of higher pay.

The package also included a small tax reduction for average workers. According to the nonpartisan Tax Policy Center, a middle-income household should on average get a tax cut this year that will life their after-tax income by about 1.6 percent. But the cut won’t be perfectly reflected in their paychecks.

Lower tax withholding on paychecks is just a piece of a complicated set of changes to tax law that the GOP pushed through in December. And what your employer withholds is based on an estimate of your tax obligation that includes many complex factors, but it’s not a perfect measure.

Ryan’s congratulatory tweet came in response to an Associated Press story about workers starting to see more take-home pay as employers implement the new withholding guidelines from the IRS. The story cited several workers’ reactions to seeking a slight increase on their most recent paychecks.

Twitter followers had fun slamming Ryan’s condescending tweet.

Write one twitter follower: “@SpeakerRyan touts a school secretary getting $1.50 a week more in her paycheck thanks to the @GOP tax cut ... the Koch brothers are banking about $25,000,000.00 a week more. Wonder which one @SpeakerRyan had in mind when he voted?”

Another wrote, “the amount of disconnect from normal people you'd have to have to be this fucking stupid is staggering. jellyfish ryan only grows a spine when he can get a jab in at the poor.”

"I can finally afford that McChicken I've always had my eye on,” tweeted another offended person.

One outraged person took on Ryan’s overall character, writing, “the amount of disconnect from normal people you'd have to have to be this f***ing stupid is staggering. jellyfish ryan only grows a spine when he can get a jab in at the poor.”

Ryan deleted the tweet after the outrage erupted.

Ryan’s net worth is estimate to be $7 million.
