The Pennsylvania court system instituted a policy this winter offering domestic partnership benefits to its employees.
Workers learned of the policy – which applies to same-sex couples but not opposite sex couples – from a memo included with their paychecks in late January.
The state supreme court recommended the change, said court spokesman Art Heinz.
“The supreme court has given this subject considerable review over a period of years and concluded that, as a matter of equity, providing these benefits was appropriate for same-sex couples,” he said. “Same-sex couples are uniquely affected by their inability to obtain health care coverage, so this was something the court deemed to be appropriate.”
