The Archdiocese of Washington’s Catholic Charities will require new employees to sign a letter saying they will not “violate the principles or tenets” of the church.

Spokesman Erik Salmi said the move was not a result of a new same-sex marriage law in the district that prompted recent changes to Catholic Charities health benefits.

The new language, he said, “is more of an expectation than a condition.”
