Santa Cruz, Calif., police are investigating as a hate crime an alleged attack on a gay man at a downtown nightclub.
Police spokesman Zach Friend said detectives believe the 31-year-old man was assaulted Jan. 2 at the Blue Lagoon because of his sexual orientation.
The alleged victim told police a man yelled anti-gay slurs at him outside the bar and then attacked him inside, leaving him with bruises and cuts.
