Three new episodes of the British comedy series “Absolutely Fabulous” are on their way to the small screen, according to the show’s producers.
The sitcom, which initially ran from 1992 to 1995 and then again from 2001 to 2003, was a global hit with the gay community. Its main characters – middle-aged BFFs Patsy, a fashion magazine editor, and Edina, a publicist – have provided two decades of camp fodder. Their drugged befuddlement and off-beat adventures were complemented with catty dialogue.
“Ooo, she’s so cold, sweetie! I’ll just bet she has her period in cubes,” quipped Eddie in a typical “Ab Fab” zinger.
The program has also inspired a made-for-TV movie and several specials. The new episodes will commemorate the program’s 20th anniversary.
The New York Post has reported that all of the original cast members, including co-creator Jennifer Saunders, Joanna Lumley, Julia Sawalha, June Whitfield and Jane Horrocks, will return in the new 30-minute episodes. They will air first on BBC America and then, in January, on the gay network Logo in the United States.
“They talk about doing new episodes of ‘Ab Fab’ all the time. Part of the problem was getting Jennifer working on it – and getting that cast together is a challenge,” Marc Leonard, a senior vice president of Logo, told the Post. “They've got everybody. They’re also lining up some celebrity cameos, and the names they’ve been throwing around have been really interesting.”
