The Milwaukee LGBT Community Center is cheering Academy Award nominee Michael Raisler, who was active in the organization’s Project Q program.

Raisler’s “Beasts of the Southern Wild” was nominated for four Academy Awards, including best picture, best director, best actress and best adapted screenplay.

Raisler is an executive producer of the film, which won the U.S. Dramatic Competition at the 2012 Sundance Film Festival and the Golden Camera Award at the 2012 Cannes Film Festival.

He grew up in Wauwatosa and remains a supporter of the center and its Project Q youth program.

“Milwaukee's LGBT Community Center played an important part in my life,” he said in a news release from the organization. “When I was coming out, Project Q was a tremendous resource for me. Having a safe space and supportive community helped me overcome personal challenges and build confidence. The Milwaukee LGBT Community Center helped me to become the person I am today.”
