The Milwaukee County Board of Supervisors voted to reinstate nearly $80,000 in HIV-prevention funding that had been vetoed by County Executive Scott Walker.

The funding supports AIDS Resource Center of Wisconsin staffers who conduct HIV-prevention outreach to injection-drug users. In addition to reducing risk behaviors associated with HIV transmission, ARCW’s outreach program helps get addicts into treatment.

“For every dollar spent on prevention, society saves $7 to $10 in costs to society in terms of reducing (drug-related) crime and incarceration,” said ARCW spokesman Bill Keeton.
