Mexico City Mayor Marcelo Ebrard vowed to defend the capital city’s law legalizing marriage for gays and lesbians.
The measure, scheduled to take effect in March, faces opposition from conservative forces in the city and the nation, especially the Roman Catholic Church.
Additionally, a federal appeal to overturn the measure is before Mexico’s supreme court.
The Mexico Attorney General’s Office filed the appeal in late January, claiming the measure violates constitutional provisions on the family and the protection of children, according to the Associated Press.
