Austin Laufersweiler survived anti-gay bullying as a sophomore at Lassiter High School in Marietta, Ga., and, through the experience, became an advocate for school reform.
He founded his high school’s gay-straight alliance, organized its Day of Silence demonstration and worked with the school administration to implement a comprehensive anti-bullying policy.
Austin also worked to promote reforms at his former middle school, helping to institute a training program to help teachers respond to “that’s so gay” remarks in the classrooms.
Earlier this fall, the 18-year-old senior won the Student Advocate of the Year Award from the national Gay, Lesbian and Straight Education Network.
