Dining to your heart’s content

An intimate dinner, a glass of wine and soft candlelight; what more could you ask for a romantic Valentine’s Day dinner?

Well, plenty actually. In this economy, it’s not enough for restaurants to throw in some hearts and flowers and call it a “special event.” They’ve got to come up with something special to bring in business. Here are a few places that are making that extra effort to help you put together a memorable romantic evening.

Bartolotta’s has coordinated a three-course meal and showing of Chocolat at Discovery World at Pier Wisconsin, 500 N. Harbor Drive. Tickets, priced at $55 a person, are available for Feb. 13 and Feb. 14. Call 414-765-8610 for more information.

Are the stars out tonight? You’ll find out at a special Valentine’s Day star show at the Soref Planetarium at the Milwaukee Public Museum, 800 W. Wells St. Stop in at 7:30 p.m. or 8:30 p.m. Feb. 12, and Feb. 13, or at 3:30 p.m., 5:30 p.m. and 6:30 p.m. on Feb. 14. Refreshments will be available for purchase, and flowers and candy are included in the $20 per couple price. Call 414-319-4629 to check on availability.

What could be more romantic than a candlelight stroll through the domes at the Mitchell Park Horticultural Conservatory? How about adding candy and cocktails! It all takes place on Valentine’s Day from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. at the conservatory, 524 S. Layton Blvd. Special event prices will apply. Call 414-649-9830 for more information.

You don’t usually think of a grocery store as a romantic place, but Sanford, 1547 N. Jackson St., is just that. In 1989, this former family-owned grocery store was transformed into a modern and streamlined dining room, where the family’s tradition of personalized hospitality evolved into a memorable dining experience. On Valentine’s Day, a four-course dinner will be served from 5:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. The cost for a choice of appetizer, entree and dessert with a set soup course is $85 per person. The few spaces available are expected to fill up fast. Call 414-276-9608 for more information.

Kilawat, 139 E. Kilbourn Ave., takes an entire week to celebrate the holiday. From Feb. 13-Feb. 19, a five-course dinner, a rose for each table, a complimentary amuse and your picture taken at the table are all packaged together at $65 a person, or $80 with wine pairings. Call 414-291-4793 for reservations.

Ever since I was a kid I’ve gotten a giggle when I say, Hotel Pfister. Now you can spend a Blu Valentine’s Day at the hotel’s upscale restaurant Blu, with a special performance of John Coltrane’s jazz classic, “A Love Supreme.” Enjoy the romantic views of the skyline as the Antropolio Quartet performs. Treat yourself and your special someone to a taste of Blu’s new small plates and sweets menu as you sip on a glass of bubbly from the Valentine’s Day Champagne tasting menu. Call 414-298-3196 for reservations.

Nothing says romance like French, so head over to the Holiday Inn Fond du Lac for a special Valentine’s menu on Feb. 13 and 14. Try the crab-stuffed beef tenderloin, an all-you-can-eat prime rib dinner or a combo of any two of the restaurant’s most popular entrees. All dinners include a glass of champagne, salad bar and strawberry cheesecake topped with a chocolate dipped strawberry. Make your reservation today, call 920-924-9112.
