U.S. Rep. Paul Ryan, R-Wisconsin

U.S. Rep. Paul Ryan is a  Republican who represents Wisconsin’s 1st Congressional District.

He was first elected in November 1998 and was facing re-election in November.

He is married to Janna Ryan and they have three children, Elizabeth, Charles and Samuel.

He was born on Jan. 29, 1970.

He lives in Janesville, Wis.

He is Roman Catholic.

He has a bachelor’s degree in economics/political science from Miami University in Ohio.

He worked as legislative director for U.S. Sen. Sam Brownback of Kansas, as staff assistant for Empower America, as an aide to U.S. Sen. Robert Kasten of Wisconsin, as a speechwriter for Jack Kemp and the director of the National Drug Control Policy and as president of Ryan Incorporated.

In the House, Ryan chairs the influential budget committee and is a member of the House Ways and Means Committee.

Ryan rates a zero with Planned Parenthood, NARAL-Pro-Choice America and 100 percent with the National Right to Life Committee.

He also rates a zero with the American Civil Liberties Union, the Human Rights Campaign, the Leadership Conference on Civil and Human Rights and the Arab American Institute.

With the anti-gay, anti-woman Concerned Women for America, Ryan rates a 96 percent. He also rates high with the American Conservative Union.

From the National Education Association, he earned an F in 2011, and other years.

The National Rifle Association has awarded Ryan an A in multiple years.

From Environment America, ConserveAmerica, the Sierra Club and the League of Conservation Voters, Ryan has low ratings. From the energy industry, he rates high.

He has a rating of 64 percent from the American Farm Bureau Federation, a 13 percent from the Humane Society Legislative Fund and a 100 percent from the Sportsmen and Animal Owner's Voting Alliance. 

He has a zero rating from the Americans for the Arts Action Fund and a 100 percent rating from the Americans for Tax Reform.
