Teenager Mary Kristene Chapa continues to recover after being shot execution-style in a Portland, Texas, park a week ago. She has not been told that her girlfriend died in the shooting.

Mollie Olgin, a 19-year-old student at Texas A & M, was pronounced dead at the scene.

The girls were found in a knee-high grass on June 23 by another couple walking in the park.

Chapa was rushed to the hospital, where she has remained in intensive care but, according to relatives, has shown remarkable improvement.

She also has been communicating with her family using sign language and writing notes, but has not, according to MSNBC, revealed much about the shooting.

Chapa’s family has told the press that they are waiting to tell her about Olgin’s death.

With Chapa lacking health insurance, a fund has been set up for donations. As of mid-day June 29, more than $24,000 had been collected from more than 600 donors.

The donation page said: Kristene is a 18 year old 2012 Sinton High School Graduate and member of the Lady Pirates Softball team. The road to recovery will be long and hard for both Kristene and her family. Unfortunately, she did not have insurance and hospital bills are mounting. All donations will go directly to her treatment and hospital bills. Any and all funds gifted to Kristene to help fund her treatments are greatly appreciated. We ask that you continue to pray for Kristene, Mollie, and their families.”

Local police are working with the Texas Rangers and the FBI to investigate the shooting.

Authorities reported this week that they have a witness and a description of a suspect. They also recovered bullet casings at the scene. There has been no information about a possible motive.

The suspect was described as light-skinned, in his 20s, with dark hair, about 5’8” and 140 pounds.

Later on June 29, activists planned a vigil in Portland. Vigils also were to take place on other Texas cities, as well as in Arizona, Florida, Massachusetts, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Washington state and Washington, D.C.

A vigil took place on June 27 in San Francisco.
