More than 400 students called for the resignation of Marquette University president Robert A. Wild during an emotional May 11 meeting on campus. Their demand came one day after the university’s academic senate passed a resolution condemning Wild for rescinding a job offer to out lesbian scholar Jodi O’Brien. A university search committee had recommended O’Brien for the position of dean of the university’s college of arts and sciences.
Although Wild assured students that no outside pressure had influenced his decision to retract his offer, the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reported May 12 that Archbishop Jerome Listecki and the archdiocese’s judicial vicar had both registered complaints about her candidacy. Pressed about Listecki’s role in what has turned into a national academic cause celebre, Wild said the archbishop “can speak for himself.”
Listecki has thus far been mum on the issue.
