South Carolina motorists have long been able to display their vanity on license plates. Soon they can display their support for LGBT equality.

The South Carolina Equality specialty plate will be sold as early as Jan. 30, according to a release from the statewide LGBT civil rights group.

Earlier this month, Indiana announced the sale of specialty plates to benefit an LGBT youth group in the state. And Maryland offers an LGBT-themed plate.

“The license plate was created as a way of allowing residents of South Carolina to publicly display their support of community, culture and policy that encourages and advocates for equal treatment for all South Carolinians, regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity,” SCE stated.

The specialty plate is a $25 upgrade.

To celebrate the new plate and its fundraising potential, SCE planned parties in Columbia and Charleston.
