A man once well-known as gay porn star Ryan Idol has been sentenced to 12 years in prison for attempting to murder an estranged girlfriend.

Marc Anthony Donais, 46, who was popular in the gay community in the 1990s as Ryan Idol and romanced the late Windy City Times publisher Jeff McCourt, was convicted of the crime a year ago.

He beat his then-estranged girlfriend over the head with the lid from a toilet tank. This week in Sacramento he was sentenced to 12 years in a California state prison.

Donais entered the woman's apartment on Sept. 5, 2009, and said he planned to kill her. They had been fighting over Donais' continued sexual relations with a man. He went into the bathroom while she was in the bath and hit her with the porcelain toilet lid, according to the Sacramento Bee.

The newspaper quoted the woman as testifying, "I felt blood gushing down my shoulders."

Donais claimed self-defense and that the woman attacked him with a knife.

Donais was convicted last September but filed for a new trial. That motion was subsequently denied, clearing the way for the Sept. 26 sentencing.

Donais launched his career in gay porn from a cover spot on Playgirl magazine.

His career path changed course in 1998, after he was seriously injured after a drug-induced fall from a third-story New York City apartment window. He left porn to focus on work in the theater, beginning with a role in "Making Porn."
