A man claims that he and actor John Travolta had a six-year romantic relationship that began in September of 1981.
Doug Gotterba, a 62-year-old pilot from California, told the National Enquirer that he became the star’s private pilot in February of that year.
“I know the date because I still have the log book and records,” Gotterba told the tabloid. He said that he flew Travolta flew to Monterey and shared a “fantastic” bottle of merlot wine with the actor over dinner at the Highlands resort in Carmel.
“I got the sense I was being courted,” Gotterba said. “As we walked from the restaurant back to the room, John suddenly said, ‘Hey, would you like a massage?’”
The question led to a night of passion and a six-year affair, according to the pilot.
Gotterba also claimed that Travolta confessed to him in 1992 that he was still attracted to men, months after marrying actress Kelly Preston.
A Travolta spokesperson dismissed Gotterba’s claims:
“This ridiculous so-called ‘new’ story is a retread of a story published a few weeks ago by the same desperate supermarket tabloid – the same tabloid that impossibly claimed that John Travolta had an encounter with ‘Doe #1’ in Beverly Hills when he was actually on the east coast working on a movie.”
The Enquirer also ran a cover picture of Travolta kissing another man on the lips on the ramp of an airplane in Canada several years ago.
Stories about Travolta’s sexuality have been in the news frequently in recent months.
