Sarah Palin posted a tweet and Facebook photo last night showing her and husband Todd holding Chick-fil-A bags while she gives a thumbs up.
“Stopped by Chick-fil-A in The Woodlands to support a great business,” the former Republican veep candidate tweeted from @SarahPalinUSA.
Chick-fil-A, which has funneled millions of dollars to right-wing hate groups, has been at the center of a growing controversy ever since company president Dan Cathy gave an interview in which he spoke out against same-sex marriage.
In recent days, Boston Mayor Thomas Menino, Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel and San Francisco Mayor Edwin Lee have vowed to keep the company from opening its fast-food restaurants in their cities.
“Chick-fil-A values are not Chicago values,” Emanuel and Menino stated in a letter to the company. “There is no place for discrimination on Boston’s Freedom Trail and no place for your company alongside it.”
But New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg, a same-sex marriage champion, disagreed. He said that denying a company the right to open a store is the same as denying a same-sex couple the freedom to marry.
Other leaders on the far right have adopted Palin’s pro-Chick-fil-A stance, including former Sen. Rick Santorum and former Arkansas Gov. Mick Huckabee. Santorum believes that homosexual acts should be re-criminalized.
