The city of Orlando, Fla., will mark the implementation of the region’s first domestic partner registry with a ceremony and celebration at 10 a.m. EST on Jan. 12 at city hall.

Orlando’s registry, a first in Central Florida, creates, within city limits, the rights for couples to become legal families with protections that include hospital visitation, health care decisions, correctional facility visitation, funeral and burial decisions, guardian designation and for both partners to participate in the education of their children.

Officials planning to participate in the occasion include Orlando Mayor Buddy Dyer, City Commissioner Patty Sheehan, Equality Florida members, the Orlando Anti-Discrimination Ordinance Committee and same-sex couples.
