The director of the cult classic film “The Matrix" has become the first major Hollywood director to publicly come out as transgender.
In promoting her new, highly anticipated film “Cloud Atlas,” Lana Wachowski, who formerly worked under the name Larry Wachowski, is making her first public appearances since transitioning. With her hair styled in candy-pink dreadlocks, Wachowski appeared in a promotional video with her brother Andy Wachowski and director Tom Tykwer. The three co-directed the new film.
“Hi, I’m Lana,” she says in the video.
In “Cloud Atlas,” a sci-fi movie starring Tom Hanks and Halle Berry, the two characters swap names and genders.
The New York Post reports that Lana Wachowski has been transitioning for years. In 2003, movie journalist Dave Poland wrote, “Every indication I have says that Larry Wachowski is now in the process of changing his sex. Dressing in public like a woman, taking female hormones and yes, having a sex change operation.”
LGBT rights advocates have praised Wachowski for her courage and for the dignified manner in which she’s handled her transition.
