Levi Strauss & Co. has debuted two T-shirts celebrating the idea that all love is equal and promoting marriage rights for gays and lesbians.
The San Francisco-based company has teamed up with the D.C-based Human Rights Campaign on the T-shirts. One style features a pair of newlywed cowboys and another features a pair of newlywed cowgirls – “the quintessence of Americana,” according to HRC.
Levi modeled the T-shirts, of a cotton blend and made in the United States, on its New York City marriage equality window displays, which were done to support a state bill.
“Levi’s has always been a tremendous voice for equality," said HRC president Joe Solmonese. “Levi’s has been a long-standing and ardent supporter of marriage equality. We are grateful for their continued commitment to the LGBT civil rights movement.”
Levi Strauss, in addition to supporting legalization of same-sex marriage at its stores in New York, donated money to fight the anti-gay Proposition 8 in California in 2008, the same year it produced the award-winning, gay-themed TV commercial “Change.”
Funds raised with the sale of the shirts benefit the Human Rights Campaign, which also has partnerships with Marc Jacobs, Michael Kors, Calvin Klein, Perry Ellis, Christian Siriano, Alex & Chloe, Kenneth Cole, Nike and American Apparel.
HRC calls the designers and companies its “fashion forward” team. Top sellers for the organization include a Marc Jacobs T-shirt with two women and a child that says, “I pay my taxes. I want my rights” and a limited-edition Kenneth Cole T that says, “Take Your Lover Up the Aisle.”
