Illinois Senate President John Cullerton said this week that the timing is right to legalize gay marriage.
Cullerton, who spoke to the City Club of Chicago, said, “We’re getting more support in the public every day. I expect we will call it very early on in the session, if not in the first few weeks.”
LGBT civil rights leaders were in Springfield this week meeting with lawmakers on the matter.
An effort to pass a gay marriage bill came up short during the lame-duck session earlier this month.
Gov. Pat Quinn has said he'd like a bill to sign by Valentine's Day.
Meanwhile, legal efforts to secure marriage equality in the state – lawsuits filed by the ACLU and Lambda Legal – are pending in Cook County.
